Media Management and Technology

Understanding and shaping the changes in the media industry requires more than just creative flair. It requires analytical, technical and entrepreneurial thinking all at once. This is precisely what the Master’s in Media Management and Technology offers you.

In Mittweida, you’ll combine management methods with an understanding of technology and creative practice – always with an eye to the future of digital communication, in a way that’s both practice-oriented and research-based. You’ll explore digital business models, next-generation media technologies, innovation management and data analysis.

What sort of content can I expect?

An overview of the course content

Your Master’s degree in Media at Mittweida combines knowledge in Business Administration with technical expertise and practice-oriented research. In Germany’s most state-of-the-art academic media centre, you’ll work with tools and technologies that are otherwise only found in major media organisations, such as in the Virtual Production studio.

At the same time, you’ll work on real-world projects with partners from the media industry and research sector. This allows you to see first-hand how new ideas are turned into market-ready products. Master’s thesis and colloquium

ā€žFor me, the degree programme in Mittweida offers the perfect blend of theory and practice. For example, in the Virtual Production Studio, we were able to try out and apply what we’d learnt straight away. The work placement in the third semester also provides a good insight into the world of work and helps us find our bearings in the wide-ranging field of Media Management. The modules are very informative and cover a wide range of topics, but they also thrive on discussions in which you can actively participate. I particularly like the almost family-like atmosphere in Mittweida. Thanks to the relatively small groups and the close relationship with the lecturers, you receive more personalised support as well as helpful tips and contacts to help you on your own path.ā€

ā€žI’d always wanted the sort of student life you picture – and from my Bachelor’s in Media Management right through to my Master’s in Media Management & Technology, that’s exactly what I got in Mittweida: lecturers who know you by name, teaching that offers real added value, fellow students who became friends for life, and unforgettable experiences surrounding my studies themselves. All of this was not only fulfilled but exceeded. The HSMW challenged, supported and shaped me both professionally and personally – and, above all, helped me grow as a person. In Mittweida, you’re not just a number, but an individual. That’s exactly what makes studying here so special for me.ā€

Application and Admission

Applicants must hold a first professional university degree worth 180 ECTS credits (Bachelor’s degree) and provide evidence of at least twelve weeks’ media-specific practical experience. This practical experience may have been gained as part of the Bachelor’s degree programme.

Language skills:

Applicants who did not obtain their university entrance qualification at a German-speaking institution must provide evidence of German language proficiency at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Proof may be provided, for example, by taking the ā€˜German as a Foreign Language’ (TestDaF) test at the preparatory college of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, achieving an average of TDN 3 in all four sections, or by presenting an equivalent certificate.

The application period for the winter semester begins on 15 April and ends on 15 July. You can register at hs-mittweida.de/bewerben. Once you have submitted all your documents, you can enrol. Once you have enrolled, your place at Mittweida is secured. For international applicants, the application deadline is 15 May, to allow sufficient time to apply for a visa.

Excellent study conditions, facilities unrivalled anywhere in Germany and a vibrant campus make your degree programme truly unique. You’ll work on real-world media projects and benefit from personalised support and a strong network. Tutorials are on hand to help with academic queries, the SAXEED start-up network supports you with your own projects, and the Student Welfare Service helps you strike a balance between your studies and personal life – for example, if you’re looking after a child or caring for a relative. On campus, you can look forward to two major music festivals a year, an active esports team and a strong sense of community. Mittweida is different from what you might expect. See for yourself at the Open Campus Day (Studieninformationstag) or the Night of Sciences (Nacht der Wissenschaften)!

Do you have any more questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, absolutely. As well as its focus on management, the programme trains you to become a highly qualified specialist in complex technological and conceptual processes. If you’d prefer to work as a specialist in data analysis, media law or product management, or as a tech consultant, this Master’s programme will provide you with the necessary in-depth knowledge.

Yes, practical projects are firmly embedded in the curriculum. In interdisciplinary Master’s projects, you’ll develop innovative media products, analyse market data for real clients or design technological solutions, enabling you to translate your theoretical knowledge directly into measurable results.

As the Master’s programme relies heavily on intensive team projects, practical media exercises and direct interaction in the studios, it’s definitely worth living near the campus. If you plan to commute, you should organise your days on campus well, as group work and studio sessions often require flexibility.

The Master’s programme is open to students from a range of disciplines. This means that we do not require you, for example, to have a Bachelor’s degree in Media Management as your first higher education qualification. However, for admission, you must provide evidence of at least twelve weeks’ media-specific practical experience. If you have already completed this practical experience during your Bachelor’s degree (e.g. through an integrated work placement), it will be fully recognised for this purpose.

This Master’s programme is well worth it if you want to work strategically at the interface between business and technology, are seeking deeper insights into data-driven media models, or are aiming for an academic career (including a PhD). It equips you with the tools to actively steer the digital transformation of the media industry.

The degree programme combines a solid academic foundation with a strong practical focus. You won’t be cramming abstract theory for theory’s sake; economic and technological concepts (such as business analytics or strategic management) are usually applied directly to real-world case studies and current challenges facing the media industry.
