Learning through haptic-digital models

Mittweida University of Applied Sciences was represented at LEARNTEC in Karlsruhe from 6 to 8 May 2025. The team from the Chair of Virtual Technologies, led by Professor Philipp Klimant, teamed up with the Berlin-based company Faszinaturen UG to present an innovative combination of mass-accurate 3D-printed models and augmented reality (AR).

The project aims to provide a better understanding of size, weight and distance. Faszinaturen UG manufactures the precise scale models, whilst HSMW has developed an augmented reality app that complements these models virtually. Amongst other things, models of the Earth and the Eiffel Tower were presented. These are the world’s first true mass models, weighing exactly as much as the original would weigh at this scale. This makes it possible to experience very large masses – such as that of our Earth – and to truly engage with the natural sciences. By combining this with augmented reality (AR), the proportions can be depicted even more accurately and brought to life. This enables a completely new learning experience.

In addition to the exhibition stand, a presentation on the project was given on 7 May at 10.30 am on the Start-Up Stage in Hall 2, entitled ‘Experience-based learning in STEM – Haptic-digital models better motivate and reinforce STEM fundamentals in the mind’.
