Bees on the Nature Discovery Trail in the Stollberg region

The three projects aim to foster active engagement with society and dialogue with the wider community.

Röbbe Wünschiers and his colleague Lisa Prudnikow are taking part with their ‘Bees on the Nature Discovery Trail’ project in the Stollberg region.

The town of Stollberg, together with its partners, is planning a Nature Discovery Trail which, on the one hand, will promote the expansion and interconnection of wild insect habitats and, on the other hand, will also facilitate their development for tourism through a walking and cycling path, an e-bike charging station, hands-on activities and other events. The wild insect habitats are to be developed not only as ecologically valuable areas for insects, but also as spaces for community life, environmental education and recreation for all Stollberg residents and their guests.

Doctoral student Lisa Prudnikow from Röbbe Wünschiers’ research group is providing scientific support for the project with regard to wild bees. This ensures that the measures taken are effective and conducive to the protection and proliferation of wild bee habitats. Pollen analysis provides valuable information about the health of wild bees and their genetic makeup, thereby enabling landscape plans to be better designed and implemented in the future.

The maintenance and overwintering of the wild bee boxes installed will be carried out by pupils from local schools. This will give them an insight into the work of a bioscientist. Public events for young and old are also planned to raise environmental awareness and promote an understanding of biodiversity research.
