The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded in 2023 for research into ultrashort-time physics. In this talk, we will explore what this ultra-fast physics has to do with the high-performance chips found in iPhones and similar devices.
Together, we will examine how electrons move when we use high-power lasers to dislodge them from their atoms, only to fling them back onto the atoms a short time later.
We will learn how this gives rise to a very exotic form of radiation – extreme ultraviolet radiation – and what this radiation has to do with modern semiconductors.
