Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, with around 6,200 students, is the largest University of Applied Sciences in Saxony. The Faculty Media Sciences is one of the largest media faculties in Germany. Graduates can be found in all major media organisations. The faculty offers training in all key areas of the media industry through four Bachelor’s and two Master’s degree programmes, delivered in exceptionally attractive facilities.

The Faculty Media Sciences is seeking to fill the following professorship by the winter semester 27/28 at the latest:

Print and Digital Publishing (m/f/d)

Your areas of responsibility:

The professor will undertake research and teaching duties within the field of appointment, particularly in the Faculty Media Sciences’
Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes. The key responsibilities of the professorship are as follows: 

• Print publishing, in particular
  • Teaching the fundamentals of pre-press, colour reproduction, colour management and printing processes
  • Delivering project-based teaching modules, particularly in pre-press, offset and digital printing
• Digital publishing, in particular:
  • Content management systems
  • Cross-media production processes and workflows (print–digital–social)
  • Automated and data-driven publishing processes
• Publishing management, in particular:
  • Production planning, process optimisation, costing and cost models
  • Quality management, standards and certifications
  • Media logistics, workflow architectures and organisational models
• Editorial design

In addition, you will be responsible for the technical supervision and further development of the university’s own print shop, in particular

• Technical and organisational responsibility 
• Further development as a teaching and research infrastructure
• Integration of the print shop into teaching modules and practical projects
• Provision of printing services to the faculty and the university

As part of the professorship, the usual specialist and interdisciplinary duties in teaching, research and, in particular, self-governance are to be undertaken. The subject matter is to be taught in lectures, seminars and practical sessions, preferably within the relevant degree programmes and also as a service to other faculties. 

Furthermore, the holder is expected to demonstrate commitment to industry and academic outreach as part of the ‘Third Mission’ of Saxon universities, to participate in international academic discourse, and to contribute to the further development of the faculty’s and university’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes.

A willingness to deliver courses in English is a prerequisite. Flexibility regarding teaching timetables within innovative study models and extra occupational programmes is required, as is a willingness to engage in international, national and regional cooperation with institutions in industry and research.

Your profile:

You have a thorough command of the key areas of the aforementioned responsibilities from both an academic and a practical professional perspective. Should you not yet possess all the necessary skills in certain specific areas, this will not be considered a disadvantage provided it can be expected that these will be acquired gradually following your appointment.

You must meet the requirements set out in Section 59 of the Saxon Higher Education Act (SächsHSG), in particular

• A relevant Master’s degree or equivalent
• A PhD or other suitable evidence of particular ability to engage in academic work
• At least five years’ professional experience, of which at least three years must have been gained outside the higher education sector, preferably in the media sector
• Demonstrated pedagogical aptitude, in particular through teaching experience

You have a very good command of German and English. You are a team player and have strong communication skills.

on a part-time basis (75%). The professorship is initially limited to 5 years and may be extended following a successful evaluation.

Financial literacy in Germany is at a low level. Young people, in particular, admit to gaps in their knowledge. Indebtedness is particularly prevalent amongst the younger generation. Gaps in financial knowledge exacerbate social inequalities. It is important to bridge these gaps, starting at school age. To this end, teaching and learning formats must be developed that provide the target group of children and young people with easy access and high learning success. 

The planned endowed professorship in ‘Financial Education using Digital Media’ at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences combines research, teaching and practical application. The aim is to engage young people in particular with topics relating to financial education through playful approaches, gamification and innovative, multimedia-based teaching and learning methods. 

Your areas of responsibility: 

• Analysis and further development of multimedia tools to improve learning outcomes 
• Development of digital media applications and gamification approaches in the financial education of children and young people
• Application of digital media in imparting financial knowledge and skills relating to investments, wealth creation and financial risks
• Production of digital media content tailored to specific target groups for financial education, e.g. through app development and game-based learning solutions
• Accompanying research into financial education, the impact of developed content and methods on learning outcomes, and the evaluation of learning outcomes
• Transfer of expertise in the relevant subject areas
• Communicating the relevance and content of financial education to society in cooperation with the GFG (Science Communication in Financial Education)
• Teaching in the fundamentals of economics, as well as finance, investment and management accounting
• Interdisciplinary teaching in game design and gamification, as well as relevant subject areas related to the research profile of the endowed professorship
