Brief profile

Gunter Süß is a media and cultural studies scholar specialising in the analysis of fictional media texts (film, TV and streaming series, music videos), applied cultural theory/cultural studies and science communication. He is also Director of Studies and currently Executive Director of the Institute for Competence, Communication and Languages (IKKS) at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences.

Prior to his appointment to the Faculty Media Sciences, Süß was a research assistant at the IKKS (2013–2022) and, before that, at the Chair of American Studies at Chemnitz University of Technology (2000–2012). He obtained his PhD there in 2005 and completed his habilitation in 2015 (dual venia legendi: American Studies and Media Studies).

His current research interests include the cultural, media and intellectual history of digitalisation, and in particular of AI, as well as the intersections between cultural studies-based media analysis and science communication.

Gunter Süß is a (co-)project leader for several research and teaching projects, including the HI-EURECA-PRO project at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, which forms part of the European university alliance EURECA-PRO. He teaches (primarily in English) on the BA programme in Global Communication in Business and Culture and on the Master’s programmes in Media Management and Media Informatics and Interactive Entertainment, as well as within the General Studies (Studium Generale).
