Dementia affects us all. Across Germany, dementia affects more than 1.8 million people living with the condition. It therefore also affects their relatives, their social circles, and the many full-time and voluntary support workers, carers and nursing staff. It affects politics, academia and research – and us as a society. Nevertheless, we still have a long way to go on the path towards a dementia-sensitive society.
‘Kompetenz Demenz’ is a specialist conference which is not aimed solely at professionals in medicine and care, but also offers a wide range of lectures and workshops to family carers, volunteers and students. The varied programme focused, amongst other things, on the latest research findings and rare forms of dementia, but above all on support options and working with relatives.

This event served as a catalyst and kick-off to encourage regular discussions about dementia in the future, thereby strengthening the participation of people with dementia.
Together with the Landesinitiative Demenz Sachsen e.V. Alzheimer Society and PflegeNetz Mittelsachsen, the idea arose to bring these and other people together and, through a wide-ranging specialist event comprising talks and workshops, to raise awareness, provide information, offer advice, facilitate networking and build capacity.
