This publication was produced to mark the 125th anniversary of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences as a ‘commemorative volume’, aiming to provide a comprehensive overview of the entire period of the educational institution’s establishment and development. A chronology is included. The aim of the “commemorative publication” was primarily to pay tribute to the achievements of key figures and the institution as a whole.

This illustrated book presents the architecture and landscape of Mittweida and its surroundings through artistically sophisticated colour photographs. In the text section, W. Schwabenitzky presents the history of the town of Mittweida, its surroundings and the landscape of the lower Zschopau Valley. H. Hofmann provides an insight into the history of the long-established ‘Technikum’, now known as Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, whilst J. Häßler’s essay focuses on the town of Mittweida in the context of current developments.

Carl Georg Weitzel, born in Mannheim in 1843 and a graduate of the Mathematical School of the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe, founded the Mittweida Technical College on 7 May 1867 and headed it until 1892. Under his leadership, the educational institution was able to build up a strong reputation, despite opposition to its private status and the associated financial constraints. Alongside Weitzel’s work as director, his significance as an author of teaching materials and works on engineering pedagogy is presented to the public, in some cases for the first time. Carl Georg Weitzel was an honorary citizen of the town of Mittweida and a Royal Chamber Councillor from 1892. He died in 1927 and was buried in the old churchyard in Mittweida.

The construction of an ‘Electrotechnical Institute’ at the Mittweida Technical College ranks among the outstanding achievements of Alfred Udo Holzt and the architect Johann Nepomuk Bürkel. The building is one of the structures that define the townscape. Holzt recognised early on the importance of electrical engineering for engineering education and industrial practice.

This ‘biographical sketch’ presents Alfred Udo Holzt, who headed the Mittweida Technical College between 1891 and 1936, as an engineer, entrepreneur, education policy-maker, town councillor and family man. During his tenure, the ‘Electrotechnical Institute’ and the ‘Training Factory Workshops’ were established. Holzt promoted independent electrical engineering training and successfully campaigned for the recognition of secondary technical education at a political level. His achievements were recognised in 1902 with the award of the title of professor and his appointment as a ‘Royal Saxon Court Councillor’ in 1917.

The publication describes the background, challenges and decisions that accompanied the construction of the Mittweida power station, initially as a thermal power station and later as a hydroelectric power station, and includes an analysis of productivity, technical development and issues related to Business Administration. The authors also discuss the significance of the pumped-storage facility. The Mittweida power station is now a technical monument.

This publication was originally produced as a companion volume to the now-closed exhibition at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences on the Pfarrberg, in which the private estate of Walter Bruch played a significant role. It also included biographical accounts of 68 engineers who completed their training in Mittweida up to 1945. Some of those mentioned come from prominent families and companies.

This revised edition includes further outstanding students, as a result of new research. This brings the total number of individuals featured to 79. Although the exhibition in its previous form no longer exists, this work on successful former students continues to be in high demand and has necessitated a revised edition.

In two volumes, the author not only traces the work of the 24 mayors of Mittweida during their respective terms of office, but also lists their predecessors dating back to 1412. The book stands out very favourably from the usual publications on regional history because, with its list of sources, list of illustrations and index of terms, the author provides those with a scholarly interest with the opportunity for further research. The extremely meticulous and conscientious study of primary sources, the highlighting of the possibilities and limitations of local politics, the significance of the commitment shown by key figures, and the inclusion of the university in the town’s history are the strengths of this publication, with which Werner Stascheit has set new standards for future work on the town’s history.

The publication appeared in the series ‘Notable Figures from the History of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences’. From 1891 to 1899, Johann Nepomuk Bürkel worked as a lecturer in building sciences at the Mittweida Technical College and as an architect and site manager. Among the outstanding buildings in Mittweida are, amongst others, the Technical College’s “Electrotechnical Institute” (1893–1894), the water tower and the engine house of the waterworks (1896–1898), the new vicarages (1896–1897), the ‘Stadt Chemnitz/Europäischer Hof’ complex (1896–1899) and the Fichte School (1896–1900).

On 15 October 2008, following almost two years of construction work, the reconstructed and refurbished main building of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences was officially handed over at a ceremony. The 100th anniversary of his birth in 2008 provided the perfect opportunity for their publication and for the presentation of the private estate in Mittweida.

In the accompanying audio collage ‘Between Worlds – On the History of the “Centre for Electronic Instrumentation”’, featured on a CD produced by the IMM Group Mittweida, the key figures have their say.

This issue was published to mark Saxony Day in Mittweida in 2009 and the 800th anniversary of the town of Mittweida. W. Stascheit’s article pays tribute to the contributions made by Karl Julius Hektor Freyer (1865–1948), the long-serving mayor of Mittweida, to the economic development of the municipality. The article by M. Stascheit and W. Stascheit focuses on the architects Johann Nepomuk Bürkel (1864–1951) and Gustav Friedrich Hirsch (1865–1947), who were both significant figures for Mittweida and friends with one another. Through their work, both had a decisive influence on the townscape of Mittweida. The article by J.-P. Domschke and H. Hofmann provides an overview of the key developments from the founding of the Mittweida Technical College to the present day. The work of outstanding figures and the connection between the town and the educational institution are highlighted. A timeline helps to contextualise and categorise events that have influenced the educational institution.

This publication was authored by members of the University History Working Group and historians appointed by local authorities. It incorporates the research findings of the authors and other historians. Both the descriptive section and the chronicle document the most significant events in the town’s history. Information is also provided on the history of the incorporated districts, the Technical College, the School of Engineering and the University, as well as on schools, companies and institutions, restaurants, hotels and pubs. Legends, stories and ‘inconsistencies’ are not omitted either. The honorary citizens of Mittweida and all mayors who have held office since 1833 are also honoured.

The book consists of two parts, combined in a single volume. This original approach allows each part to be read from either the front or the back. Starting from the historical discrimination faced by women – which also affected their ability to pursue higher education and an academic career – the first part, ‘Women at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences’, shows how, gradually – and thanks in part to a changing understanding of women’s role in working life – more and more women were able to study and put their education to practical use. Female graduates, lecturers and staff members of the university recall their time at the institution and describe their life journeys. To help readers navigate the text, this section includes a chronology of the university’s history.

In the second part, ‘Women at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences’, the results of a workshop on the topic of ‘Women in Science and Technology’ are presented at the outset. The following sections report on the university’s wide-ranging efforts to promote gender equality. The ‘Family-Friendly University’ initiative, the programme for female professors, the MENTOSA mentoring network and the Career Service Centre are all designed to support these efforts.

This publication presents, for the first time, all the works of art belonging to Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, categorised into sculpture, painting, graphic art, textile art and ceramics. Some of the artworks featured have not yet been exhibited to the public.

This biographical documentation was produced as part of a research project by the University Archives on behalf of the Rector and the Chancellor of Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. It represents the University Archives’ contribution to our 150th-anniversary celebrations.
Since spring 2013, the authors have carried out extensive research in archives, libraries and other institutions, including in Berlin, Leipzig, Chemnitz, Cologne, Frankfurt (Main), Barcelona, Madrid and Mittweida. The research material collected now fills more than 40 archive folders.
Spanning almost 300 pages across 11 chapters, the book provides a detailed account of the key stages in Udo Steinberg’s life, illustrated with a wealth of images. Eight historical city maps are included to illustrate the places where he was active in Germany and Spain.
The documents researched in Spanish were translated into German as part of the research project. The publication also features a bilingual presentation for Chapter 1, ‘Biographical Details’.
