Medical insurance

Anyone wishing to study in Germany must prove that they have valid health insurance before enrolling. Please note that we cannot accept travel health insurance; you must choose one of the health insurance providers in Germany. Students under the age of 30 should choose a public health insurance provider.

Students from the European Union

Students from EU countries as well as Norway, Liechtenstein, Great Britain and Switzerland have little to do. They simply present their European Health Insurance Card. This is usually the standard card that is also used in their home country. It can be recognised by its blue back with the European stars and country code.

There are still some transition periods for the European Health Insurance Card during which a provisional certificate is valid. If such a provisional certificate is available, it must be confirmed by a German public health insurance provider.

Students from one of the treaty countries Bosnia-Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey and Tunisia

To study in Germany, you must apply for a certificate of entitlement in your home country that is valid for the entire duration of your stay. This certificate has different names depending on the country:

The respective entitlement certificate must then be digitally transmitted to a public health insurance provider in Germany, such as AOK Plus. The German health insurance fund will then check the certificate and forward the corresponding insurance notification to Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. This process can take several weeks.

Students from other countries

EU students who are not insured in their home country and all students who come from a country other than those mentioned above are required to have health insurance with a German health insurance provider. Proof of health insurance is a prerequisite for enrolment at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences; we cannot accept travel health insurance.

If you are younger than 30, you must register with a  public health insurance provider. The advantage of this is that doctors bill the insurance provider directly for treatment, so you do not have to pay any bills yourself.

If you are older than 30, you must arrange private health insurance. Registering with a public health insurance provider is only possible in exceptional cases.

The health insurance must be valid from the start of the semester, which is 1 September for the winter semester and 1 March for the summer semester. Proof of this is mandatory and a prerequisite for enrolment. After completing your registration, the health insurance company will automatically send the proof of insurance to Mittweida University of Applied Sciences digitally, which can take several weeks. Only after this has been completed can the university confirm your enrolment.
