What is Mittweida University of Applied Sciences' objective with regard to COVID-19?

The COVID 19 pandemic will continue to influence life, teaching, research and work in the winter semester 2020/2021. It is a hybrid semester with broad-based campus operations. Compliance with protective measures and the traceability of contacts are fundamental prerequisites for ensuring that teaching, learning, research and university management are and remain possible on campus.

As a general guideline:

  1. Containing the pandemic remains our top priority.
  2. One's own health and that of colleagues and fellow students has priority.
  3. There is a special responsibility towards risk groups and others who are particularly affected by the pandemic (e.g. caring for children or relatives).
  4. Attendance and home office should be combined reasonably to avoid unnecessary contact and crowding.
  5. Attendance on campus should be limited to the necessary occasions.

Which rules apply generally on campus?
  1. If a person feels ill, he/she stays at home.
  2. There is usually one entrance and a separate exit for all buildings.
  3. The buildings of the university are locked even during the day. Access is possible with the HSMW-Card.
  4. Wearing a face mask is obligatory in the buildings. Masks are to be put on before entering the buildings and hands are to be disinfected immediately after entering, disinfection products are available in the entrance areas.
  5. A minimum distance of 1.5 meters to the next person must be maintained in the buildings.
  6. The use of the elevators is allowed only in case of physical limitations and only alone as well as for transport purposes.
  7. Unnecessary ways in the buildings are to be avoided in order to keep contacts as low as possible. The duration of stay in shared areas including sanitary facilities is to be kept to a minimum. The direct route to the course room or workplace shall be chosen.
  8. In general, shared objects must be disinfected by the user immediately after use. This applies e.g. in kitchens, sanitary facilities and other shared rooms as well as for printers.
  9. Employees in risk groups who carry out activities on campus must have a risk assessment carried out in advance by their supervisor. Facility Management is available for any queries.
Which rules apply additionally to courses?
  1. If the minimum distance is not maintained, the teaching staff will ask the students to move before the course can begin.
  2. At the beginning of each course, a registration of those present will be made in order to trace possible chains of infection. Usually this is done electronically via the HSMW-Card at the entrance of the larger auditoriums. In smaller courses, the module attendance lists from the intranet are used, which the lecturers can find where they usually download the lists for exam attendance. If necessary, empty lists can be taken from the technical cabinets.
  3. It is generally permitted to remove the mask in the auditorium, seminar room and laboratory as soon as the minimum distance is guaranteed. However, there are rooms in which this is not possible, which means that masks are compulsory during the course; these rooms are labelled at the entrance doors.
  4. The rooms must be pulse ventilated every 45 minutes by the teaching staff for two minutes.
  5. Teaching in function rooms must be designed in such a way that supervision by laboratory engineers/teaching staff directly at the student's workplace is ruled out and that it is also possible to break off/interrupt the course without personal contact (e.g. central emergency stop switch).
  6. Objects of laboratory practice as well as work surfaces can be disinfected before use in seminar rooms and laboratories by the users themselves. Disinfection materials are available.
How do I find out which elements are offered on-campus?

Please check your timetable in the HSMWmobil app or on the web. Place and time of the events are listed there, online elements are flagged explicitly.

What about breaks?
  • Rooms 3-019, 4-021, 8-102 and 8-103 are open to students who cannot return home between courses or who cannot use a stable internet connection at home.
  • Breaks may only be spent together inside and outside the buildings when the minimum distance is maintained. 
  • In case of longer breaks between courses, students are requested to leave the building. They should return home to minimize contacts.
  • The canteen (Mensa) initially offers a limited range of meals from 11:30 a. m. to 1:30 p. m. When the lecture period begins, the range of offerings and opening hours will be expanded. Current information is available on the Website of the Studentenwerk.
  • The university library is open and has also expanded its range of electronic and physical resources. Please check the HSB website for details.
  • Using the tea kitchens is only permitted to employees. Only one person at a time is allowed to use the kitchen. Used items must be disinfected by the user immediately after use. Dishes and cutlery must be washed directly or sorted into the dishwasher. The dishwasher must be set to a high temperature program.
Why and how is attendance on campus registered?

Every attendance in the HSMW buildings must be registrated in order to enable contact tracing. In the event of an infection, it must be possible to notify all contact persons as soon as possible to prevent the spread of the pandemic. Every attendance must therefore be registered in time and space. The registration is done exclusively to trace potential chains of infection.

For students, the registration of attendance is done at the beginning of each course. Please make sure to carry your HSMW-Card with you: Usually a scan of your HSMW-Card is sufficient to log the attendance. In some cases, lists are used on which first name, surname and matriculation number are entered.

Please avoid accumulations in the buildings and on the campus. Attendance must be kept to a minimum and must be spread out over time and space.

For employees, mobile work (home office) and attendance should be reasonably combined in consultation with their supervisors.

The registration of the attendances of all employees can be done in "absence principle": Basically, it is then assumed that the employees carry out their work in the buildings of HSMW, absences on whole days are recorded. The decision as to whether attendances or absences are registered lies with the deans and the heads of the departments.

In any case, the registration is made centralized within the faculties and departments (e.g. deans' offices), and registration includes:

  • Who is when working from home? Or: Who is working when in the university?
  • Who is when and where on a business trip?
  • Who is sick and when?

In addition, it is centrally registered which external visitors were at HSMW (when and where) and how they can be contacted. This also applies, for example, when lecturers have appointments with students in their offices, such as consultation hours or appointments to supervise theses. The "Teilnehmerliste für die Erfassung von Gästen der Hochschule Mittweida" should be used for this purpose.

Registering attendances or absences in a systematic approach ensures that chains of infection can be broken in the event of an infection, because the information can quickly be retrieved from a few central points. Therefore, the primary focus is on the registration of contacts.

What happens in case of illness?
  • If you feel ill, please stay at home.
  • If COVID-19 symptoms (especially coughing, fever and respiratory problems) appear while on campus or within 14 days thereafter, please inform the university immediately by e-mail to corona@hs-mittweida.de or by phone to +49 3272 58 14 93 and get tested.
  • Employees send their sick note scanned or as a photo by e-mail to dezpersonal@hs-mittweida.de and inform their faculties or departments. The original sick note must be submitted by mail together with the attachment to the health insurance voucher.
How to behave when returning from a risk area?

The regulations for entering Germany and Saxony stipulate a test obligation for those entering from risk areas identified by the BMG, BMI and Foreign Office. Travellers from non-risk areas can also be tested on a voluntary basis.

Mittweida University of Applied Sciences has additionally established a process for all students returning to the HSMW from risk areas, which protects all university members as well as the university town:

  1. Incoming students inform the Stura by using this form at least 48 hours before returning from a risk area.
  2. Subsequently, internal university departments as well as the health department of the district of Central Saxony are informed. The Health Office orders a quarantine in German, the Stura forwards the information to international students in English.
  3. If a Covid 19 test is not existing or not recognized and no medical certificate confirming absence of symptoms is available, the Stura offers students to arrange an appointment with a local doctor or test center on their behalf. Only such a test with a negative result can allow the quarantine to be lifted prematurely. If the offer is rejected, the quarantine order remains valid.
  4. If the test result is negative for Covid 19 and the medical report certifies the absence of symptoms, the quarantine is lifted. If the test result is positive or the medical report does not certify the absence of symptoms, the quarantine must be maintained, the university leadership will be informed in this case and contacts will be traced in order to break possible chains of infection.

If quarantine is imposed, the Stura offers to provide food and beverages. These "orders" shall be sent by e-mail to the Student Council.

What happens if the company closes during the internship?

Planned and already started internships in companies should be started/continued. If the internship cannot be continued due to closure of the company, the student council asks for information with name, first name, seminar group and matriculation number by e-mail as soon as possible. It must then be decided on a case-by-case basis whether the internship can be continued after the reopening of the company. If it is not possible to continue, a solution will be sought within the university after the resumption of attendance.

What about semesters abroad and stays abroad?

Students can terminate their stay abroad without prejudice to their support and do not have to start it. The International Office is available by e-mail for further enquiries - also when it comes to planning a future stay abroad.

Are there any special regulations for dual students?

Generally, the same regulations apply to dual students as to others. Students who study in the dual system continue to complete the phase planned for this period. More detailed arrangements can and should be made with the practice partner and the deans of studies.

Are there any special rules in the DHS model?

The regulations apply analogously to examinations in the academy phase of the DHS model. They are supplemented in the procedure with special quality assurance measures.

In view of the suspension of campus teaching, at least the date and modalities of the attendance phase must currently remain open. In view of the disaster situation in Germany and Europe, serious planning is not possible.

As soon as regular university operations are foreseeable again after the corona crisis, the university can take "catch-up measures" for all students to successfully complete their studies. This will presumably require both operational regulations for the operation of the university as well as interventions in the study and examination regulations. You can already be assured that we will work together to minimise the effects and burdens on DHS students resulting from the special structure of their model. We will find pragmatic and if necessary unconventional solutions.

We would also like to inform you that the Student Council has contacted the landlords in Mittweida known there with the request for an accommodating solution regarding the concluded rental contracts. How are the regulations for studying in Austria?

The courses and examinations for the winter semester 2020 will, as far as possible, take place in a mixture of online and classroom teaching. The coordination and announcement of the dates is carried out by the cooperation partners in Austria, Studien- und Technologie Transfer Zentrum Weiz and Ingenium Education Graz.

The current situation is unfamiliar in many ways and can become a burden. Students can find tips and tricks for digital learning on the Campus Mundus University website. Time management, self-management and tips for the "home office" are included as well as information on the digital services of the university library and the OPAL learning platform. Perhaps the concept of mindfulness can also help to reduce discomfort and fear.

Self-help also begins with supporting each other. Within the university, some seminar groups have already organised student video conferences in the evening to exchange ideas with each other.

In addition, the Studentenwerk now offers its psychosocial counselling for Mittweida students in digital form, thus helping them to cope with problems that cannot be solved by their own efforts.

Are there other offers from HSMW that help in this situation?

All parts of the HSMW invest time and energy to help all members of the university in this situation.The company health management has collected information on the Concept of mindfulness. It can help to reduce stress and anxiety.

The university sports department is currently working on the winter semester program. The intention is to make it possible to take part in training on campus again, although restrictions will continue to apply to sports.

Where can I get further information?

The Stura supports Mittweida's students during the Corona pandemic on an ongoing manner - by mail, telephone, social media and newsletter. As the rectorate's representative for student affairs, Stura's managing director is also responsible for communicating a lot of information from the university management to the students. The Stura provides information about the services offered by the Studentenwerk, such as advice by telephone and e-mail, as well as help in the event of financial bottlenecks, among other things by e-mail.
