Background
The amount of time people spend sitting is increasing. For example, an adult German spends more than half of their waking hours sitting, resulting in an average of 9.3 hours a day. People with an office job are particularly at risk, especially if they also use the car to get to work, watch television in the evening and generally have little exercise in their everyday lives. They usually spend up to 15 hours a day sitting. Long periods of physical inactivity have negative effects on our physical and mental wellbeing - and not just because our bodies are not designed to sit for long periods of time. Nowadays, this often results in a variety of health impairments.
