All-Gender Restrooms
A Symbol of Diversity and Respect
All-gender restrooms at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences offer everyone—regardless of gender or identity—a safe and discrimination-free space.
They help break down barriers, enable participation, and make diversity visible in everyday university life. In doing so, HSMW is sending a clear signal for equality, appreciation, and respectful coexistence.
General Information
Why Do We Need All-Gender Restrooms At The University?
At Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, there are currently only restrooms for women and men. This often causes difficulties for trans*, inter*, and non-binary people, or anyone who does not clearly identify with one gender. They then have to choose a restroom that may not match their own gender identity. This can lead to uncomfortable situations—such as being accused of using the "wrong" toilet, being outed, experiencing discrimination, or feeling unsafe.
To ensure that everyone can feel comfortable and safe, we want to offer restrooms that can be used by everyone—without questions, without coercion, without risk.
Who Can Use The All-Gender Restrooms?
All-gender restrooms can be used by everyone, regardless of their gender identity. This means that women, men, non-binary, trans* and inter* people, as well as anyone who does not clearly identify with one gender, are equally welcome here.
All-gender restrooms also make it easier for people with caregiving responsibilities, such as parents with children, to visit the restroom together.
Please note that none of the all-gender restrooms are accessible. However, there are separate restrooms that are signposted as accessible.
Does That Mean There Are No Longer Ladies' and Gents' Restrooms?
No. Ladies' and gents' restrooms will continue to exist in the vast majority of cases. So anyone who does not want to use all-gender restrooms can still use the ladies' or gents' restrooms in the immediate vicinity at any time.
Why Are There Still No All-Gender Restrooms In Some Buildings?
The all-gender restrooms that have already been installed are an important first step. In the long term, we want to ensure that all central buildings and locations at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences have gender-neutral toilets within easy reach – so that all students and staff have the opportunity to use them without any complications.
